Cold and flu season is upon us in Vancouver! We are expecting a particularly nasty flu season this year. This is the time to start supporting your immune system to keep you and your family healthy.This article will be focusing on Glutathione and its incredible benefits on improving your immune system. Glutathione has quickly become one of my favourite supplements. It provides so many health benefits including detoxification, improving cellular energy production, improving skin appearance 14 (acne, melasma) , improving liver health and improving the immune system.

Glutathione is one of the main antioxidants produced in the body and used by the body for cellular detoxification. It reduces the oxidative effects of free radicals. When your antioxidant defense systems are overwhelmed due to poor diet, lack of antioxidant nutrients, toxins or stress, your immune system suffers and you are more susceptible to viral or bacterial infections. Taking Glutathione as a supplement will help to reduce this oxidative stress in your body and particularly on your immune system. The result is a stronger immune system that can help to fight off infections such as the flu virus.

Glutathione is naturally a tripeptide, made of Glutamine, Cysteine and Glycine. Most of your glutathione is produced in your liver. Foods high in sulfur such are cruciferous vegetables are important in providing the building blocks to make Glutathione.

Glutathione has excellent anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. Studies have shown Glutathione strengthens T Cell activity in the immune system, which coordinates the attack against viruses and bacteria. It also helps to balance the immune system, reducing allergies and auto-immune activity.

There is some great research showing lowered levels of cysteine and glutathione in the body correlates with lowered immunity and increased risk of infection.

Glutathione is easily one of my top 3 favourite supplements. I have noticed a significant improvement in overall immune function in my patients that take Glutathione either orally every day or weekly intravenously. Glutathione is a great addition to any supplement regime to support overall health including immune function. Its also great for kids!
