As winter is approaching, this the perfect time of the year to discuss Glutathione and its many health benefits. This is one compound I suggest for helping our body during the winter season.

I do suggest adding Glutathione, either intravenous or orally, to your winter supplement regime to support detoxification, promote skin brightening and improve the immune system

WHAT IS GLUTATHIONE?

Glutathione is a tripeptide made up of 3 amino acids: Cysteine, Glycine and Glutamic Acid. It is primarily synthesized in the liver and found in high concentrations in almost every cell of our body.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GLUTATHIONE?

Glutathione is a compound produced in our body that has many different health benefits. It is nicknamed the “Master Antioxidant”. It is one of the body’s primary defense against toxins including pollutants and toxic metals. It also protects our brain from toxins and free radicals and is directly produced by our neurons.

GLUTATHONE FOR IMMUNE SUPPORT

As cold and flu season approaches, many of us are thinking of ways to support our immune system and stay healthy over the winter months. Glutathione may help! Glutathione may increase the body’s ability to fight against the flu virus due to its anti-viral activity.(1) (2)

GLUTATHIONE FOR SKIN BRIGHTENING AND WRINKLE REDUCTION

Fall and winter months can be harsh on our skin with the cold and dry weather. Winter is also a great time to work on skin lightening and brightening as tans start to fade and there is less sun exposure. Although research is limited, patients in our clinic do report improved skin texture and improved skin brightening. A study conducted at the Division of Dermatology in Thailand found women who took Glutathione for 12 weeks had a skin lightening effect (lower melanin index and an improvement in wrinkles) compared to the placebo group. GLUTATHIONE MAY BE BENEFICIAL IN TREATING HSV-1 VIRAL INFECTIONS (COLD SORES)

Many people do suffer from cold sores during the winter months. Supporting the immune system is important when trying to prevent cold sores as our body’s immune system is our main defense. A 2003 animal study found Glutathione may be beneficial in treating HSV-1 infections (the virus that causes cold sores) (4)

HOW TO INCREASE GLUTATHIONE LEVELS IN THE BODY

Glutathione is produced within the body, primarily by the liver. However, as reported in clinical research taking a supplement orally is an effective way to increase blood levels of Glutathione. In animal studies, Glutathione levels in the blood reached their peak concentrations 90-120 min after receiving an oral supplement of Glutathione. These levels remained high over the next 3 hours. Giving the precursors of Glutathione had little to no effect on blood levels. Therefore, taking Glutathione as a whole supplement may be more effective than taking the precursors alone. (5)
