Precision Medicine is a revolutionary new model of medicine that selects the appropriate and best therapies for an individual patient based on diagnostic testing, with DNA genetic testing being at the forefront of precision medicine.
I quote from the BC Medical Association website www.doctorsofbc.ca

“Precision medicine refers to the use of an individual’s genomic and epigenetic information, including individual patterns of disease, in order to provide targeted treatment that is tailored to the person’s genetic profile potentially leading to better individual treatment.”

Over the past few years I have become very interested in genetic testing. I really do believe this is the medicine of the future. Understanding your genetic profile can help both you and your physician tailor your diet, exercise, lifestyle habits and even supplements that may be the best for you. For example, we can gain very valuable information about how you handle stress, how you handle alcohol and caffeine, how well you detoxify chemicals, and what type of foods are the best for your body. These are the epigenetic factors that you can change in your life to optimize your health.

The same is true for weight loss. In one study conducted by investigators from Stanford Prevention Research Center, the researchers found that the group of dieters who ate a diet that was appropriate for their genotype lost twice as much weight as those following a generic diet. (1)

The answer to the type of exercise your body is most responsive to may also be held within your genetic profile. Why do some people respond well to HIIT while others don’t respond? Again, the answer may lie in their DNA.

Genomic medicine is relatively new. It has only been in the past 5 or 6 years that we have learned more about the role genetics can play in prevention of disease and how the information can be used to tailor diet and lifestyle recommendations.

If you eat well, exercise and still have difficulties losing weight or gaining muscle, consider genomic testing. From this information, we can make recommendations about your diet, exercise and supplements to support your healthy lifestyle program.
