The Importance of Sulfur in Detoxification

The New Year is upon us! January is the month of detoxification for many of us. Indulgences in food and alcohol over the holidays can leave many of us feeling sluggish, tired and maybe a few pounds heavier at the start of the New Year.

There are many great ways to start cleansing your body. The health benefits of a cleanse include better mental clarity and focus, an increase in energy, more youthful and glowing skin, better bowel movements, better digestion and weight loss. This is a great time of the year to complete a cleanse.

Cleanses can consist of dietary changes alone or include supplements to assist the detoxification process. Whatever method of cleansing you use, don’t forget to include more sulfur in your program.

Most of us don’t think of sulfur when we think of our cleanse. Sulfur is a very important mineral in our body. A sulfur deficiency can have a very big impact on our body’s ability to detoxify harmful chemicals. Sulfur is needed to produce Glutathione, our body’s main Antioxidant. Most of our Glutathione is produced from our liver. If you are deficient in sulfur, your liver will have a harder time producing Glutathione and removing toxins from your body.

Cruciferous vegetables are a great source of sulfur. These foods include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, leeks, garlic and onions. If you cannot tolerate these foods (ie cannot digest these foods well) you are at a much higher risk of being sulfur deficient. Slowly incorporate more of these foods into your diet and supply your body with vital sulfur to detoxify chemicals and toxins.

I also recommend adding in a Glutathione supplement or intravenously to help your body detoxify during a cleanse. Glutathione administered in an IV or taken orally as a drink has tremendous health benefits. These include better mental clarity, more energy, much better skin including both texture, color and less acne breakouts. Patients also report better bowel movements, more regular bowel movements, improved sleep and a stronger immune system when they take Glutathione.

So don’t forget the importance of adding in a sulfur source to help your body detoxify. Adding in foods high in sulfur (cruciferous vegetables) is a great addition to a cleanse. Additionally, taking Glutathione either as an IV infusion or as a supplement will provide a higher dose of sulfur that your body will love! If you decide to take oral Glutathione please choose a liposomal Glutathione that is absorbed quickly. Non-liposomal forms are too unstable and will not provide the same health benefits.
